Jerónimo Elespe's (Madrid, 1975) approach to printmaking has steadily developed since our first collaboration with this artist in 2016. The media and its pace suits his working method to perfection, rendering them a cumulative process of addition and subtraction, layer upon layer until the desired accumulation of information has been attained.

Jerónimo Elespe_Antigüedad
This series, titled Antigüedad is made up of 7 individual pieces made at Benveniste Contemporary in the spring of 2024.
Once carved and grated, the birch wood blocks were inked with a minimum layer of ink, a process which reveals the artists' marks, the natural grain and the mechanical manipulation of the wood.
Elespe focused on 2 main blocks, and printed them in several different orders - at times together, at times in positive, at times in negative. Several monotype print runs were added, together with cut-outs of different materials that blocks the ink, partially or completely.
Two suggested figurative images freely appear among the abstractions with a certain dreamlike evocation, thus making maximum use of the materials and processes.

The series is titled Sonidos de lluvia y construcción [Sounds of rain and construction].
As it happens (more and more frequently) the title refers to one of my writings, a kind of blurred script as we advanced in the workshop.They are texts, as I think I have already told you, that I have no intention of showing for the time being, surely they don’t have any literary value, but for me they are very important. They serve as a platform and cast for many of the works, sometimes and perhaps only as mere reflection of everything lost in the translation from one medium to another. In that little text I am telling you about, images of construction and images of a storm (in a sense of an almost universal flood) alternate in different rhythmic cycles of destruction, regeneration and deletion. It seemed like a very clear metaphor to what we have been starting to do in your workshop.
